No Joke: We Got Chickens!

Yes, in another attempt to make sure the blogging world knows the Britten's are going mad, we purchased four lovely little ladies this weekend. No...this isn't some sad "chicken crossed the road" joke...we really bought baby chicks and they are living in my kitchen as we speak. (OK...type.)

Really...I swear my life gets more and more interesting everyday. This weekend I found myself being woke nightly to the tiny squeaking of our new additions wondering what we've gotten ourselves into.

For years it has been a dream for our family to continue eating more locally and these girls will help our weekly 2-3 dozen egg consumption. The kids have been begging for a pet, but Drew is allergic to everything, hence our interesting compromise. So instead of the normal family dog or cat, the Britten's have chickens. Go figure. (It does seem a bit fitting for our family.)

Since we live in town we are in the process of designing and building a chic, urban chicken coop to add to our backyard landscape. Fiona, of course, wants Dad to have build the coop yesterday, but these things take time. Not too much time...the clock is ticking before they get too big for our kitchen.

Drew and I were convinced the chicks grew overnight the first day we had them. The next few weekends we'll be busy preparing a new home for the ladies, but when aren't we busy. The chickens will definitely add an interesting element to our lives.

congrats! i'm happy to say that iowa city is considering reversing the anti-chickens part of the city code, so we might get to have a few ourselves one of these days!

You are not crazy... they DID grow overnight. The grow FAST! You will need a bigger box very soon!

Have fun and let me know if you have any questions I can help with (not that we're experts)!
